Vinesh Phogat created history at the Asian Games 2018 as she became the first Indian woman to win a wrestling gold at the continental event. However, apart from the wrestling gold there was another to celebrate for Vinesh as she got engaged to long-time boyfriend Somvir Rathi on Saturday. Somvir is a Greco-Roman wrestler

Interestingly, the engagement took place upon her return from Jakarta at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. The rings were exchanged outside the arrival gates of the airport.

Vinesh, who turned 24 on Friday, also celebrated her birthday by cutting a cake outside the airport.

Vinesh was linked romantically to javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra recently in the media. After which, Vinesh slammed the reports on Twitter. And now Vinesh has cleared that her engagement immediately after the Asian Games was not a result of the controversy.

“No, it was nothing like that. For me, that article involving Neeraj didn’t exist. Somvir and I are friends for 7-8 years and the whole country knows about our relationship,” Vinesh was quoted by the Times of India.

Vinesh won India a gold medal at the Asian Games when she beat Yuki Irie of Japan on Monday in the final of the women’s wrestling.

Vinesh defeated Yuki 6-2 in the 50kg category to bag the top prize and take India’s tally of gold medals to two at the 18th edition of the Asian Games in Indonesia.

The gold also enabled Vinesh to achieve another feat as she became the only woman wrestler to win two medals in back-to-back Asian Games.

Vinesh had earlier won a bronze medal in the 48kg category at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

Vinesh also won back-to-back gold medals in 2014 Glasgow and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games this year.
